New York State to Send “Inflation Refund Checks” to 8.2 Million Households
The governor’s office announced that up to $400 checks will be mailed directly to eligible New Yorkers without the need for them to apply or take any other action. Joint tax filers with income up to $150,000 will receive $400, while joint tax filers with income between $150,001 and $300,000 will receive $300. Single tax filers with an income up to $75,000 will get $200, and those with incomes between $75,000 and $150,000 will receive $150.
“Starting today, we’re sending inflation refund checks to over 8 million New Yorkers because it’s simple—this is your money and we’re putting it back in your pockets,” said Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The New York Department of Taxation and Finance stated that the checks will be mailed to eligible taxpayers who filed a New York state resident income tax return, reported income within qualifying thresholds, and were not claimed as dependents for the tax year 2023.
The agency mentioned that due to the large volume of checks being mailed out, some recipients may receive their checks sooner or later than others. The checks will be sent to the address associated with the most recently filed tax return.
No direct deposits will be made; only checks will be mailed.
The one-time payments were part of the 2025 state budget provision to address the impact of inflation on household costs. These refund checks are separate from stimulus checks authorized by Congress.
Senator Josh Hawley introduced a bill in July to send tax rebates to qualified taxpayers using revenue from tariffs, but the bill has not passed the Senate.
Inflation has been on the rise, with consumer prices increasing 2.9 percent in August from a year earlier. In response, the Federal Reserve recently cut its policy interest rate by 0.25 percent.
