Frequent users of the GasBuddy app, an app that helps you locate affordable gas and secure discounts on refueling, might find interest in the Pay with GasBuddy+ charge card. This card is replacing the Pay with GasBuddy fuel card, which is set to be phased out by 2025.
Offered by Fifth Third Bank, the Pay with GasBuddy+ card promises savings of up to 33 cents per gallon. While this discount is attractive, there are certain conditions that may make it challenging to achieve these savings consistently.
Here are five essential things to understand about the Pay with GasBuddy+ card.
1. It’s a charge card, not a credit card

The Pay with GasBuddy+ card is a charge card, meaning you cannot carry a balance from month to month as you would with a traditional credit card. Instead, you must settle the full balance either through autopay or manual bill payment. The autopay feature offers significant advantages, which will be elaborated on later.
2. A credit check isn’t necessary
You can acquire the GasBuddy+ card without undergoing a hard credit inquiry, which means you can avoid the temporary negative impact on your credit score that typically follows such an inquiry. To be eligible for the card, you must be at least 18 years old, reside in the U.S., and have a qualifying bank account. During the application process, you will link your bank account to the GasBuddy+ card and use it to pay off the card’s balance.
3. Autopayment offers additional perks
As mentioned earlier, GasBuddy cardholders can choose between automatic or manual bill payment. Opting for manual payment will require you to settle the balance within seven days of receiving the statement each week.
However, selecting autopay will grant you the following benefits:
-
A discount of 3 cents per gallon, which increases to 5 cents per gallon at specific gas stations.
-
The opportunity to earn an additional 3-cents-per-gallon discount for every $25 spent at the gas station convenience store.
-
A daily spending limit of $100 and a weekly limit of $400. If you opt for manual bill payment, you will have a $50 weekly spending limit.
-
The ability to enroll in a GasBuddy Plus or Premium membership. Both tiers offer additional gas savings, with Premium members receiving roadside assistance, including towing and lockout services. Plus membership costs $89 annually or $7.99 per month; Premium membership costs $99 annually or $9.99 per month.
4. Achieving the maximum gas discount requires effort
Securing a 33-cent discount per gallon with the GasBuddy+ card is not guaranteed. To reach this amount, you will need to combine multiple discounts. Here’s how the calculations work:
-
As mentioned earlier, GasBuddy+ cardholders enrolled in autopay can receive up to 5 cents off at select gas stations.
-
Similarly, participants in the autopay program can enjoy an additional 3 cents per gallon discount for every $25 spent on non-fuel purchases inside convenience stores.
-
By activating a Deal Alert in the GasBuddy app, you could potentially save up to 25 cents per gallon.
Discounts from Deal Alerts and convenience store purchases add to the 5-cents-per-gallon discount, resulting in a maximum savings of 33 cents per gallon.
The rewards earned on gas and convenience store transactions are automatically applied at your next fill-up when you use the GasBuddy+ card for payment. Any unused rewards expire after 12 months.
Earning rewards on gas does not have to be complicated. Consider the Citi Custom Cash® Card, which automatically provides 5% cash back in your top spending category for up to $500 per billing cycle, then 1% after reaching the limit. Gas stations are one of the eligible bonus categories.
5. It’s light on fees
The GasBuddy+ card does not come with an annual fee, and since it is a charge card, there are no APR or late fees either. However, there is a $3.50 fee for card replacement and a $15 fee for returned payments.
