Successful people possess a belief system that empowers them to achieve their goals, regardless of their circumstances or situations. This doesn’t mean they don’t face failures and setbacks; rather, they refuse to let these obstacles prevent them from reaching their potential.
By most standards, I’ve had a highly successful career in real estate — as a Keller Williams Mega Agent, Broker-Owner, and bestselling author. For the past 14 years, I’ve had the privilege of coaching some of the nation’s top-producing real estate agents. What I can genuinely attest to is that “success leaves clues,” and the following seven mindset hacks are essential components of any successful agent’s belief system.
1. The journey to learn is shorter than a lifetime of regret
If you’re reading this post, you’re likely a person who values learning. While this mindset hack may seem basic, truly grasping its meaning requires a deeper exploration.
Many of my coaching clients are eager for knowledge but often seek it in areas of personal interest rather than in areas where they most need to learn and improve. This tendency leads us to read, listen, and absorb information that aligns with our current beliefs and understandings.
As adults, we may hesitate to invest time to learn new things that seem uninteresting, complicated or outside of our comfort zone. However, as you build and grow your real estate business, you will encounter challenges that demand fresh approaches.
Remember Einstein’s quote: “You cannot solve a problem with the same thinking that created it,” or Henry Ford’s adage, “Do what you have always done… and get what you have always gotten.”
“You cannot solve a problem with the same thinking that created it.”
—Albert Einstein
This mindset hack reminds us that despite the time and effort it takes to learn something new, complicated, or dull, it is far better than living with the regret of not reaching your full potential.
Let’s keep this in mind as you read the remaining hacks. 😉
Missing out on signals of opportunity such as greater inventory, builder incentives, and assumable mortgages can occur if you fail to pay attention to the current real estate market. The mindset hack “What you focus on expands” serves as a reminder of how your mindset and focus can impact your outcomes significantly.
In a slowing real estate market, prioritizing relationships, dignity, and peace of mind over a commission check is essential. Gary Keller’s quote emphasizes the importance of doing what is right, regardless of financial gain. A real-life scenario where an agent chose to cover the cost of repairs for a buyer’s damaged sewer line showcases the significance of prioritizing relationships over money.
Taking personal responsibility for the situations we find ourselves in is crucial. The mindset hack of asking oneself, “How am I creating this?” or “How am I allowing it?” shifts the focus from being a victim to being empowered to make changes. By acknowledging our role in shaping our reality, we can move from feeling helpless to feeling in control of our circumstances.
“Shine your light!” is a mindset hack that encourages agents to overcome the fear of rejection and stand out in their field. By being unapologetically themselves and sharing their message boldly, agents can attract the right audience and make a meaningful impact. While I cannot dictate the actions of others, I have the power to “shine my light” so that my tribe can easily spot me!
### 7. There are no opportunities without growth
It is a common saying that everyone desires results but is unwilling to put in the necessary effort. This mindset hack encourages us to focus on the personal growth we undergo while striving towards our objectives.
When guiding my clients to become better listing agents, it is vital for them to engage in more appointments with challenging sellers or compete against seasoned agents. While they may receive feedback about their lack of experience, limited marketing plans, or pricing strategies, it is in these areas that their growth takes place.
While some may view feedback as an insurmountable obstacle, causing them to pivot or give up entirely, this mindset hack redirects our attention to growth as an integral part of the journey. Embracing the experience and feedback, no matter how tough or negative, allows us to refine and enhance ourselves. This gradual process chips away at the barrier until we ultimately break through to the other side.
Focusing on personal growth reveals that you have attained your goal by becoming a better version of yourself in the process, rather than solely through trial and error.
### 8. Give, with no expectation to receive
This mindset hack can be challenging for new agents transitioning from traditional 9-5 jobs. The concept of investing time and effort without immediate compensation may seem inconceivable.
The real estate industry rewards you not for your time or efforts but solely for the value you bring.
While earning an income and supporting yourself and your family are primary motivations for obtaining a real estate license, the industry rewards you not for time or effort but for the value you provide.
To achieve significant success and maximize earnings, you must offer your knowledge, attention, and time without expecting direct compensation in return.
For instance, when working with first-time home buyers, you must be prepared to educate and guide them, even if they are not yet ready to purchase or committed to working with you. Assisting sellers in selling their homes may require sharing some trade secrets to build trust and credibility.
Although it may feel like you are giving without immediate returns, adopting this mindset hack instills trust that the goodwill you sow will yield future clients, referrals, and the desired income.
### Your Turn
These mindset hacks were instrumental in helping me navigate through a challenging period in my life. Despite losing everything during the Great Recession after 15 successful years in real estate sales, the experience propelled my greatest growth.
The mindset strategies I embraced during that time taught me patience, introspection, and ultimately shaped me into the coach and leader I am today. These principles continue to guide both me and my clients in achieving what may seem like unattainable goals.
