The Pros & Cons of Bulkhead Plane Seats

The bulkhead in an aircraft is like a partition that separates different sections of the plane, such as crew areas, passenger classes, or mid-cabin bathrooms in larger aircraft.

The first row of seats behind these partitions are known as bulkhead seats. These seats are typically the first row on the plane or the first row after first or business class.

On larger aircraft with multiple classes and mid-plane bathrooms, the first row beyond these areas is usually bulkhead seating.

Sitting in the bulkhead can be a great or not-so-great experience depending on your preferences and travel habits.

Advantages of bulkhead seats

There are several reasons why choosing a bulkhead seat can be beneficial.

Extra legroom

Bulkhead seats usually offer more space in front, allowing for a more open and less cramped feeling. Those with long legs will appreciate the extra distance from the barrier in front.

Convenient access

Bulkhead rows offer easy access to the aisle and bathrooms, making it quicker and more convenient to move around the cabin.

This is especially useful for those seated in the middle who need to use the restroom frequently. The extra space allows for easier movement during the flight.

No seat reclining into your space

With no seats in front, you won’t have to deal with the inconvenience of someone reclining into your space or spilling drinks on your tray table.

Ideal for traveling with infants

If you’re flying with a lap infant, bulkhead rows are where you can hang a bassinet if available. Make sure to reserve one in advance if needed.

Possible early boarding

Some airlines offer early boarding or dedicated bin space for bulkhead seat passengers, providing added convenience. Check with your airline for specific benefits.

Disadvantages of bulkhead seats

Bulkhead seating may not be suitable for everyone.

Limited legroom for stretching

Despite extra space overall, those wanting to stretch out their legs fully may find it challenging due to the proximity of the wall.

Close to high-traffic areas

Being near bathrooms or galley means more activity around your seat, which can be distracting or inconvenient for some passengers.

Inconvenient placement of amenities

Entertainment screens and tray tables may be located in the armrests instead of the seatback, potentially limiting comfort and convenience.

Additionally, the lack of movable armrests may be restrictive for larger passengers.

Limited storage space

Without under-seat storage, you’ll need to use overhead bins for your belongings, which may be inconvenient for frequent access during the flight.

Possibility of sitting near infants

While convenient for parents, sitting near infants may not be ideal for all passengers. Consider bringing earplugs for a more peaceful journey.

Potential extra cost

Some airlines may charge extra for bulkhead seats, so be prepared for additional fees depending on the airline and seat type.
