4 Secrets from Chefs for Better Cruise Dining

Finding top-notch dining experiences on cruises is becoming increasingly easier. Cruise lines are now catering to high-end tastes by offering specialty dining experiences led by renowned chefs. For instance, British royal chef Darren McGrady, who served Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana, helped create an afternoon tea experience for Princess Cruises. Even budget-oriented cruise lines are appealing to foodies with celebrity endorsements like Carnival Cruise Lines featuring Food Network personality Guy Fieri and his onboard restaurants.

Regardless of your cruise budget, there are some chef-approved tips to eating better on a cruise. One tip is to try a specialty dining experience, such as the afternoon tea experience created by Darren McGrady for the Sun Princess ship from Princess Cruises. These experiences may come at an extra cost but often feature higher quality food and a carefully curated menu.

It’s often worth paying extra for fine dining on a cruise, as casual dining options are usually included in the fare. Taking the time to enjoy a multi-course meal can enhance the dining experience. Additionally, exploring local ingredients for freshness and opting for unique dishes like Portuguese egg tarts and specialty pizzas can add variety to your culinary journey on a cruise.

“If [going to a fancy restaurant] is something you don’t feel comfortable doing, don’t stress,” McGrady says. “You don’t need to do it, because you’re here to have fun.”

McGrady himself has been known to make a beeline for the cruise buffet’s Indian food section, which he considers comfort food.

“Cruises don’t need to be stuffy,” he says. “Relax, enjoy yourself and make the most of what’s onboard — especially the food.”
