Amazon develops video AI model, The Information reports By Reuters

(Reuters) – E-commerce giant Amazon has unveiled a new generative artificial intelligence (AI) that is capable of processing images and videos in addition to text, reducing its dependency on AI startup Anthropic, The Information reported on Wednesday.

The new AI model, known as Olympus, will enable Amazon to diminish its reliance on Anthropic’s Claude chatbot, a popular feature on Amazon Web Services (AWS), according to sources familiar with the situation.

Olympus, the new large language model (LLM), can analyze scenes in images and videos, assisting customers in searching for specific scenes like a winning basketball shot using simple text prompts, the report mentioned.

Earlier this month, Amazon infused an additional $4 billion into Anthropic, a competitor of OpenAI, replicating a similar investment made in September last year to leverage generative AI technology.

It is speculated that Amazon might unveil Olympus at the upcoming annual AWS re:Invent customer conference next week, as per a source aware of the matter.

Amazon did not respond to a Reuters request for comment outside regular business hours.

The move by the online retailer comes amidst efforts to challenge the notion that competitors like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI are ahead in the development of generative AI.
