As the 30-day mark of the 60-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel approaches, it is evident that IDF military operations have not ceased. Recent reports indicate that Israel is considering extending its presence in Lebanon beyond the agreed 60-day pullout deadline.
Of particular concern is the fact that Israel has escalated its offensive by advancing deeper into southern Lebanon, seizing the town of Wadi al-Hujeir and engaging in machine gun fire, prompting civilians to flee the area once again.
The town of Wadi al-Hujeir is now located nearly five miles beyond the Blue Line, surpassing Israel’s previous invasion during the recent conflict. Additionally, it is situated along the Litani River, beyond which Hezbollah was expected to withdraw its forces following the ceasefire.
Despite the supposed ceasefire, traveling in occupied southern Lebanon remains perilous, with Israel targeting anyone attempting to return to the seized towns and villages. Lebanese officials have closed roads around Wadi al-Hujeir to protect civilians from Israeli incursions.
Concerns have been raised by various parties regarding Israel’s failure to withdraw from Lebanon and its ongoing attacks on Lebanese territory. UNIFIL has condemned Israel’s actions, highlighting the damage inflicted on residential areas, agricultural lands, and road networks in southern Lebanon.
Israel has not provided any official statement regarding its recent incursions or reports suggesting an extension of its stay in Lebanon. The US, as the guarantor of the ceasefire, has yet to address the numerous Israeli violations.
It appears that the US considers the ceasefire announcement as its sole obligation, with no plans to intervene further. The situation remains tense as Israel’s actions continue to defy the terms of the ceasefire agreement.
