Expect mortgage rates to fluctuate in January, possibly ending lower than they started, resembling a journey from the mountains to the beach.

The uncertainty surrounding the change in presidential administrations in January could lead to increased volatility in rates, according to Chen Zhao, from Redfin.

The Federal Reserve’s plan to cut short-term rates by half a percentage point throughout 2025 has surprised investors, causing a spike in mortgage rates. However, it is predicted that rates will decrease by the end of the month.

Various forecasters have differing opinions on the future of mortgage rates, with some expecting them to remain stable while others anticipate slight fluctuations based on factors like inflation and the federal deficit.

Insights from Redfin suggest that mortgage rates may remain relatively unchanged in the coming months, while other experts point to various economic factors that could influence rate fluctuations.

Fannie Mae predicts that mortgage rates will not see significant changes in the first quarter of the year, indicating a level of stability in the market.

Despite hopes of lower rates, Fannie Mae suggests that average mortgage rates are likely to remain above 6 percent throughout 2025, presenting a challenge for potential home buyers.

What the Future Holds for Buyers and Sellers

Higher mortgage rates could result in fewer buyers entering the market, leading to increased housing inventory. This surplus could provide more options for buyers looking for their dream home.

By the end of 2025, it is anticipated that housing inventory levels will return to pre-pandemic levels, offering buyers a wider selection of homes to choose from.
