Before ending the conservatorships, certain conditions must be met, such as ensuring financial stability, improving transparency and accountability, and implementing effective regulatory measures. Congressional actions may also be necessary to end the conservatorships, including passing legislation that outlines the process for transitioning out of conservatorship and establishing a framework for the future oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

During a campaign event in August, Vice President Kamala Harris warned that privatizing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could potentially increase the annual interest costs on the average American mortgage by $1,200. However, experts consulted by PolitiFact noted that the exact impact of privatization on mortgages is uncertain and difficult to predict accurately.

The Harris campaign cited a 2015 analysis by Moody’s Analytics and The Urban Institute to support the claim of a $1,200-a-year increase in mortgage costs due to privatization. It is important to carefully consider the potential consequences and implications of privatizing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac before making any decisions that could impact homeowners and the housing market.
