According to sources familiar with the matter, TikTok is set to shut down its U.S. operations on Sunday due to a federal ban that is scheduled to take effect. However, there is a possibility of a last-minute reprieve if President-elect Donald Trump issues an executive order to suspend the shutdown for 60 to 90 days.

The law signed in April requires a ban on new TikTok downloads on Apple and Google app stores if the Chinese parent company, ByteDance, fails to divest the site.

While users who have already downloaded TikTok may still be able to use the app, U.S. companies will be prohibited from providing services to support the app starting Sunday.

President-elect Trump’s transition team has not provided immediate comment on the matter, but there are discussions about finding a way to preserve TikTok while ensuring data protection.

Additionally, there are reports that TikTok’s CEO has been invited to attend the President-elect’s inauguration in a position of honor.

President Joe Biden has indicated that he has no plans to intervene to block the ban, and the Supreme Court is currently deliberating on whether to uphold the law or pause it for further review.

If the ban is implemented, TikTok plans to inform users through a pop-up message and provide them with the option to download their data. The shutdown is intended to protect service providers from legal liability.

TikTok and ByteDance have been seeking a delay in the law’s implementation, citing First Amendment protection against government interference in free speech.
