When it comes to finding car reliability rankings, one of the most comprehensive sources is the annual car reliability survey conducted by Consumer Reports (CR). This survey gathers data from over 300,000 vehicles reported by CR members. The survey covers various aspects of vehicle performance, such as engine, transmission, body hardware, paint, and trim. For electric vehicles (EVs), the survey also includes batteries and charging systems.

CR assigns a score from 1 to 100 to each vehicle model based on reported problems and their severity. These scores are then used to rank car brands for average predicted reliability. The most recent survey covers model years from 2000 to 2024, with a few 2025 models included.

Here is a list of the top 10 most reliable car brands based on findings from the CR member surveys:

1. Subaru
– CR Reliability Score: 68/100
– Subaru moved to the top of the brand reliability rankings in 2024. The Subaru Forester and Impreza had the highest reliability scores, with other models like the Crosstrek, Legacy, Outback, and Ascent also performing well.

2. Lexus
– CR Reliability Score: 65/100
– Despite moving down from the top spot, Lexus remains a strong contender with models like the NX, ES, and RX Hybrid scoring above average for reliability.

3. Toyota
– CR Reliability Score: 62/100
– Known for durability, Toyota maintained a strong presence in the reliability rankings with models like the RAV4, Corolla, and RAV4 Prime scoring well.

4. Honda
– CR Reliability Score: 59/100
– Honda is recognized for building reliable cars, with models like the HR-V, Accord, and CR-V performing above average in the reliability survey.

5. Acura
– CR Reliability Score: 55/100
– Acura’s RDX and MDX models were ranked for reliability, with the RDX scoring above average.

6. Mazda
– CR Reliability Score: 55/100
– Mazda’s MX-5 Miata and CX-5 were ranked above average for reliability, while the CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid scored below average.

7. Audi
– CR Reliability Score: 54/100
– Audi’s A4, Allroad, and A5 models scored above average for reliability, while the Q5 and Q8 E-Tron scored below average.

8. BMW
– CR Reliability Score: 53/100
– BMW’s i4 and X5 models performed well in the reliability survey, while the iX scored below average.

9. Kia
– CR Reliability Score: 51/100
– Kia’s Sorento Hybrid and Carnival models scored above average for reliability, while the EV6 scored below average.

10. Hyundai
– CR Reliability Score: 50/100
– Hyundai’s Elantra Hybrid and Sonata models were ranked above average for reliability, while the Santa Cruz and Ioniq 5 scored below average.

It’s important to note that hybrid vehicles have shown to be as reliable as traditional gas-powered cars, while electric vehicles are improving in reliability. When choosing a car, consider both the brand’s overall reliability and the specific model’s track record for dependability. Conduct thorough research and test-drives to ensure the vehicle meets your expectations for reliability and performance.
