AI-powered agents dominate the EasyA x Consensus Hong Kong hackathon

As Consensus Hong Kong 2026 comes to a close, the spotlight has shifted from corporate discussions to the exhibition floor. While institutional discourse took center stage, nearly 1,000 developers immersed themselves in the EasyA x Consensus Hackathon, marking a clear shift in the industry: the “Year of the Application Layer.”

The hackathon, a recurring feature of Consensus by CoinDesk’s premier events, witnessed more than 30 projects presenting on demo day. The caliber of projects, boosted by generative AI, showcased the seamless transition from a “proof of concept” to a “market-ready product.”

Raising the bar: From infrastructure to intent

The talent pool of developers at Consensus has steadily evolved. In past editions, hackathon entries were predominantly technical, focusing on developing quicker consensus mechanisms or specialized scaling solutions beyond the grasp of the average user.

However, this year has seen a paradigm shift. Developers have transitioned into product creators, redirecting their attention from backend operations to user experience.

“What we’ve observed is developers building solutions that are accessible to real users,” noted Phil Kwok, EasyA’s co-founder. “There’s a significant uptick in the application layer. While Asia celebrates the year of the horse, blockchain is experiencing the year of the application layer.”

This pivot towards User Experience (UX) was evident in the innovative utilization of “passkeys”, technologies borrowed from iOS and Android that simplify user logins for Web3 apps, eliminating the cumbersome 24-word seed phrases, Kwok highlighted. By streamlining these traditional hurdles, developers are crafting products that seamlessly integrate into users’ daily app usage.

The Champions’ Circle

The judges commended projects that emphasized automation, security, and risk management, vital pillars for the forthcoming surge in retail adoption, Kwok elucidated.

First place: FoundrAI ($2,500)

Claiming the top position was FoundrAI, an autonomous AI entity engineered to function as a comprehensive “startup in a box.” The platform not only launches tokens but also oversees the entire project lifecycle, including hiring human developers to actualize the product. It presents a thought-provoking glimpse into the future of decentralized labor.

Second place: SentinelFi ($1,750)

Tackling the industry’s persistent issue of “rug-pulls”, SentinelFi delivers real-time safety evaluations for crypto traders. By conducting on-chain analysis across six categories, the tool empowers users to identify fraudulent tokens before committing capital—an indispensable tool as token launches surge.

Third Place: PumpStop ($1,000)

PumpStop secured the third position with a non-custodial trading layer focused on risk mitigation. Leveraging state-channel instant execution, it enables traders to set stop-loss orders with on-chain verifications, bringing professional-grade trading tools to a decentralized setting without compromising custody.

The Evolution of the Exhibition Floor

The expansion of the hackathon mirrors a broader transformation in the Consensus ethos. Once predominantly a corporate affair, the event has progressively assimilated the “builder” culture into its essence. Dom Kwok, EasyA’s co-founder, observed the relocation of the hackathon from peripheral rooms to the heart of the exhibition floor.

“Each hackathon we organize grows in scale,” stated Dom. “It claims a larger portion of the conference floor each year. We even had someone fly in from San Diego solely to witness the innovations being developed.”

Despite the somber macroeconomic backdrop reflected in token values, the atmosphere in Hong Kong remained resolutely optimistic. Organizers emphasized that while market trends and monetary policies influence charts, developers are focused on the 93% of the global population not yet involved in crypto. The path to engaging the next billion users appears to be paved by developers who recognize that usability reigns supreme, according to Dom.

Phil and Dom eagerly anticipate Consensus Miami 2026 to witness the heightened standards and increased developer participation, showcasing a plethora of innovative ideas.
