Nearly 21,000 AI agents have been launched under the new ERC-8004 standard

A new generation of AI agents has been launched on Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Solana, using the ERC-8004 token format. These agents hit the market shortly after the introduction of the new on-chain standard.

The world of AI agents is experiencing a renaissance on the blockchain, with innovative tools emerging on Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Solana. Some of these agents have even propelled the previous leader, Virtuals Protocol, to new heights.

Previous launches of AI agents relied on tokenized entities with pre-defined characteristics. Many of these agents have persisted, particularly in the realm of crypto data and news aggregation. Some assets from the initial wave of AI agent coins still hold a combined valuation exceeding $2.9 billion.

What sets ERC-8004 AI agents apart?

The ERC-8004 protocol aims to facilitate the creation of tools for discovering, selecting, and interacting with agents based on predetermined parameters. This enables ERC-8004 agents to thrive in a fully AI-powered economy.

These agents have the capacity to perform a range of tasks, from simple actions like ordering a pizza to more complex computations. Developers can employ various mechanisms to vet agents, including reputation-based systems, staking validation, zero-knowledge proofs, or trusted execution environment (TEE) oracles.

The introduction of this standard coincided with a period of testing AI agents for increased independence and capabilities. On-chain verification tools can now be utilized to assess available agents and implement safeguards against undesirable behaviors.

In contrast to the previous wave of Virtuals Protocol and other AI agents, the focus this time is on moving beyond speculative tokenization and into practical real-world tasks. Agents have been integrated into social media platforms, such as Moltbook, and are poised to leverage new infrastructure for engaging with human users.

Over 21,000 agents deployed across multiple chains

Mere weeks after the testing of the ERC-8004 standard, the network was already home to 20,928 agents. Only a select few achieved top rankings on the leaderboard, attracting over 15,000 users to the network.

The resurgence in agent creation is yet to reveal the full extent of use cases and profitability for these agents. Nevertheless, the influx of new users indicates a continued demand for decentralized applications, with Ethereum remaining a key platform for innovative transactions.

Prior to the ERC-8004 standard, interactions between agents were confined to closed systems within frameworks like Virtuals Protocol. The adoption of the ERC-8004 standard, coupled with a unique ERC-721 NFT for each agent, provides AI bots with a broader scope of potential influence.

During the initial stages, agents are being deployed to newly developed environments like LobKill, reminiscent of the Moltbook setting. Transactions are securely recorded on the blockchain, ensuring a verified history for each bot.

Challenges such as spam prevention and reducing reliance on established social media platforms for bot interactions still need to be addressed. Additionally, there is a lack of standardized token usage, as the agent infrastructure remains fragmented. Much of the current activity is experimental, exploring the feasibility of bots becoming trusted users while mitigating risks like wallet vulnerabilities.
