A recent analysis by Gondola, the hotel award search tool and booking platform, compared standard room award pricing across 1,078 Hyatt properties before and after the May 20 award chart changes. The analysis also included category changes for 136 hotels.
The data revealed that average points prices increased between 2% and 12% across every category. However, the typical price for a room outside of peak periods remained steady, and many high-value sweet spots within Hyatt’s program were largely unaffected. Furthermore, the median value of a Hyatt point remained unchanged at 1.8 cents each, even after the May 20 adjustments. This suggests that while there were some price increases, the overall value of the program has been maintained.
The analysis also compared prices across all eight categories in the World of Hyatt award chart using both average and median pricing. The median pricing, which represents typical night pricing, showed a more positive outlook. Categories 1 and 2 actually saw a decrease in median pricing due to the new Lowest pricing tier falling below the old Off-Peak floor. Categories 3 to 7 experienced no significant changes in pricing, while Category 8 was the only category to see a median price increase. The table displaying Hyatt’s award chart data shows the changes in the number of properties, median points per night, redemption rates, and other metrics for each category. The data indicates that while average costs increased in every category, the median stayed relatively flat due to the addition of Upper and Top tier properties that only affect the highest-priced nights. Despite these changes, the overall valuation of Hyatt points remained the same at 1.8 cents each.
The biggest devaluation came from standard properties that changed categories, resulting in a 36% increase in points required per night on average. Midmarket brands saw the largest percentage increase in pricing, with premium properties at the top end of the award chart experiencing the largest raw-point increases.
However, high-value redemptions were largely unaffected, with properties where points already offer high value remaining unchanged. Despite concerns about five-tier pricing impacting high-value properties, Gondola’s analysis of 50 properties showed that the redemption value of Hyatt points above 2.5 cents each remained consistent before and after the award chart changes. The average number of points per night across various properties increased slightly from 11,913 points to 12,122 points, marking a 0.3% increase. However, the median redemption value, which compares points to the cash rate of a stay, remained unchanged. Among the 1,078 properties reviewed, 163 still offer an average redemption value of more than 2.5 cents per point. Surprisingly, this list includes high-end properties like Park Hyatts in Paris, Milan, the Maldives, and St. Kitts, which have the best average redemption rates.
The practical implication is that the overall value of Hyatt points has not changed significantly. If you are planning a Hyatt redemption, check if the property’s category has changed. If not, your points are worth approximately the same as before. While average costs have increased and properties in different categories have been affected, the typical night at most Hyatt properties remains consistent with pre-May 20 rates. The introduction of Upper and Top pricing tiers has expanded the peak date range without impacting the minimum redemption values.
Importantly, the median value of a World of Hyatt point remains at 1.8 cents, making Hyatt points a strong currency in hotel loyalty programs.
