Robinhood Chain Explodes Post-Mainnet Launch

The Robinhood Chain, operated by @RobinhoodCrypto, has seen a significant increase in total value locked, reaching nearly $79 million within its first eight days of operation. This marks a 69% surge in the past 24 hours, showcasing a strong start for a blockchain that was only activated by the brokerage on July 1. However, what was unexpected was the emergence of a memecoin playground on the chain, drawing real liquidity and attention in a different manner than originally anticipated.

Exploring Robinhood Chain

Robinhood Chain is the Ethereum Layer 2 solution developed by Robinhood (@RobinhoodApp), utilizing the Arbitrum Orbit stack and settling transactions back to Ethereum for enhanced security. Operating on an average block time of 100 milliseconds, the chain supports gas transactions in $ETH and is fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). It does not have a separate native token and offers a seamless deployment process for standard contracts. For a detailed technical overview, refer to my previous article titled What Is Robinhood’s New L2 Blockchain?, published at the launch of the mainnet.

Upon its launch, Robinhood Chain introduced various products integrated into the platform, such as Stock Tokens representing shares like NVDA, GOOG, and AAPL for trading globally through the Robinhood Wallet. Additional features include Robinhood Earn, offering lending opportunities with the $USDG stablecoin at approximately 7% APY through Morpho, as well as perpetual contracts via Lighter and AI-driven trading tools. The chain’s initial partners included Uniswap, Chainlink, BitGo, and Alchemy.

Impressive Growth and Performance

Robinhood Chain experienced rapid growth, attracting over 141,000 new active wallets on July 8 and increasing daily active addresses to approximately 193,000, as reported by CryptoTimes. As of July 9, the total value locked surpassed $78.97 million, marking a significant 68.72% surge within a single day, nearing its peak for the week.

The majority of locked value is concentrated in:

  • Lending activities on Morpho, accounting for around $58 million.
  • Uniswap follows as the second-largest contributor with nearly $20.6 million locked.
  • Other services like prediction markets and launchpads lag significantly behind in terms of value locked.

The chain primarily attracts DeFi-native capital seeking yield, with the platform covering gas fees for the initial 90 days to encourage early adoption. Notably, the stablecoin market cap on the chain stands at $267.98 million, with $USDG representing 68.87% of the total. It’s essential to differentiate between stablecoins held in wallets and value locked in protocols, as the active real-world asset market cap is currently at $12.8 million, a crucial metric for a chain focused on tokenized equities.

Trading activities have been robust, with the decentralized exchanges on the chain recording $433 million in trading volume over the past 24 hours, led by Uniswap. Applications built on the chain generated $1.47 million in fees during the same period, while chain-level fees remained relatively low at $38,861, reflecting the network’s early stage and subsidized operations.

The Emergence of Memecoins

Despite its original focus on real-world assets and AI-driven finance, Robinhood Chain unexpectedly became a hub for memecoin trading. Traders embraced the platform for launching memecoins, deviating from the intended use case. The surge in memecoin activity was exemplified by the rise of $CASHCAT, a token inspired by Robinhood’s Cash Cat mascot, achieving a $140 million market cap within days. The integration of Pump(dot)fun’s Solana launchpad further fueled memecoin trading on the chain, contributing significantly to the daily DEX volume. While this trend is common for low-fee EVM chains with fresh liquidity and a large user base, it deviates from the narrative a publicly traded company like Robinhood would prefer for its blockchain launch.

Potential Tokenization and Future Developments

Despite utilizing $ETH for gas transactions, Robinhood has not announced plans for a native token, points system, or airdrop within the chain ecosystem. This strategic decision aligns with regulatory considerations, as a publicly traded entity like Robinhood faces stringent scrutiny from the SEC in token-related activities. Drawing parallels with Coinbase’s approach with Base, another brokerage-linked Layer 2 solution that refrained from launching a native token, Robinhood emphasizes ecosystem growth and global market presence over tokenomics in its public communications.

Robinhood Chain continues to leverage $ETH for gas transactions, boasts a total value locked of nearly $79 million dominated by lending activities, facilitated $433 million in DEX trading volume within 24 hours, and accommodates a thriving memecoin trading scene that emerged organically despite the initial focus on real-world assets and AI-native finance.
