Conflux Network is set to undergo a mandatory update with its v3.1.0 hard fork scheduled for August 25. Node operators are required to install the update before seven network proposals and a private security fix are implemented.

In an announcement on August 3, Conflux Network stated that all nodes must upgrade to version 3.1.0 before the blockchain reaches epoch 155140000, expected on August 25.
An epoch represents a stage in a blockchain’s operation. Conflux chose the target number as the official deadline to account for potential variations in activation time based on block production speed.
Node operators who update before the deadline can easily install the new software and restart their systems. It is recommended to complete the process within two days of initiating the update.
Operators who delay the update beyond the target epoch will face a more complex process, involving the removal of existing blockchain data, installation of the latest version, and redownloading network records.
Failure to update may result in nodes being incompatible with the upgraded blockchain, leading to issues with block downloads, transaction processing, and mining activities.
The update also mandates the replacement of an important settings file with the new version included in the release. Using the old file may prevent nodes from starting due to stricter checks in version 3.1.0.
Operators who have customized their node’s data storage or activity recording settings can transfer these preferences to the replacement file. Conflux has also updated the list of entry points nodes use to connect with other network participants.
Additionally, there is an optional setting to reduce node storage usage, which may result in longer initial restart times as the software rebuilds current network information. Subsequent restarts should return to normal durations.
Changes to Network Rules
Conflux will activate seven proposals (CIP-166, CIP-167, CIP-172, CIP-173, CIP-174, CIP-175, CIP-176), each describing planned adjustments to the network’s rules and features.
Three proposals focus on enhancing Conflux eSpace’s compatibility with Ethereum-based applications. eSpace supports Ethereum smart contracts, wallets, and development tools.
CIP-166 introduces a new operation for counting empty digits at the beginning of a numerical value, aligning Conflux with recent Ethereum standards.
Under CIP-167, Conflux will support a specific digital signature type commonly used in passkeys and online identity systems, aiming to simplify login processes for developers.
CIP-174 will restrict the size of data sent to a network feature and adjust transaction fees, in line with Ethereum updates to prevent resource abuse.
The update enhances Conflux’s Ethereum-compatible environment, particularly important for traders following restrictions on Conflux eSpace transactions by Upbit.
Addressing Transaction and Staking Issues
Four proposals focus on rectifying existing network issues. CIP-172 mandates a standardized transaction format to prevent duplicate identifying codes.
CIP-173 addresses validator dispute resolution processes, extending penalties to validators withdrawing their deposits. CIP-175 and CIP-176 resolve interoperability and transaction processing concerns.
The software release also improves the proof-of-stake system’s handling of transactions and block proposals, without requiring existing nodes to redownload the entire blockchain.
Important Security Fix
Version 3.1.0 includes a security patch, the details of which will be disclosed post hard fork completion to prevent potential attacks on unupdated nodes.
Conflux advises against building custom versions from unfinished software to avoid discrepancies with the official release. The project plans a coordinated security approach similar to past fixes to ensure network integrity.
