BOLTS CEO says all modern encryption is ‘a good guess’ and quantum will call the bluff

The digital security landscape is facing a looming threat that has experts like Yoon Auh, founder and CEO of BOLTS Technologies, concerned. With quantum computers on the horizon, the effectiveness of today’s encryption methods is in question.

BOLTS Technologies is tackling this issue head-on by developing a crypto-agile security infrastructure that allows for seamless transitions between cryptographic protections. Their QFlex product, currently being piloted on the Canton Network, offers a solution for tokenized real-world assets.

“We specialize in cryptographic logistics, moving cryptography to where and when it’s needed,” Auh explained.

The advent of quantum computing has sparked fear due to its potential to crack the math problems that underpin modern cryptography. This vulnerability, known as Shor’s algorithm, poses a significant threat to encrypted platforms across various sectors.

“Nation-states are investing heavily in quantum computing, recognizing the urgent need to address this threat,” Auh noted.

Legislation such as the Quantum Computing Cybersecurity Preparedness Act underscores the seriousness of the situation, urging federal agencies to transition to post-quantum cryptography.

Challenges in Security

Auh acknowledges that achieving 100% security in encryption is a tall order. Even modern cryptography, including post-quantum standards, lacks provable security.

“Security in encryption is based on assumptions rather than absolute proofs,” he emphasized.

With the unpredictability of quantum advancements, Auh advocates for a proactive approach to security through crypto-agility. This flexibility allows for the seamless adaptation of protective measures without the need for extensive updates.

Anticipating Quantum Challenges

While the timeline for quantum computers’ impact remains uncertain, Auh stresses the importance of readiness rather than pinpointing a specific date for potential breaches.

“We have the science and the mandate to adopt quantum-resilient cryptography, regardless of the exact timeline,” he noted.

The acceleration of quantum technology underscores the urgency for robust security measures, not just for individual users but for national security interests.

“Advancements in quantum computing are driven by national security imperatives,” Auh explained.

In this digital arms race, the key lies in adaptability and flexibility to combat evolving threats effectively.
