BNB Chain activates Pasteur hard fork to strengthen bridge security

$BNB Smart Chain (BSC) recently implemented the Pasteur hard fork, enhancing bridge verification and validator authorization processes while optimizing block capacity to accommodate more transactions.

Upon the launch of the Pasteur upgrade on the BSC mainnet, $BNB Chain emphasized the improvements in network security, particularly in bridge operations, staking mechanisms, and governance protocols. Despite the increased transaction capacity per block, the 450-millisecond block time remains unchanged.

The Pasteur upgrade integrates three key $BNB Evolution Proposals. BEP-682 addresses issues related to duplicate validator entries during cross-chain verification, while BEP-695 focuses on enhancing validator key management, slashing penalties, and governance processes. Additionally, BEP-675 introduces a new approach for block submission by specialized builders.

By preventing duplicate validator counts, updating validator keys, and restricting unauthorized addresses from voting, the Pasteur upgrade aims to optimize block efficiency during peak periods of network activity.

Pasteur Enhances Block Efficiency

Previously, BSC’s block-building process involved builders executing transactions before submission, leading to redundant validation by validators. The new approach allows builders to submit pre-executed blocks for validation, significantly increasing throughput and reducing block underfilling.

Tests conducted on QANet demonstrated an 88% increase in transaction throughput, from 1,237 to 2,324 transactions per second, with minimal impact on gas usage and block intervals.

$BNB Chain advises that these results are based on controlled test environments and may vary in real-world scenarios.

The Pasteur upgrade builds on previous efforts to reduce block times, with the Maxwell and Fermi hard forks significantly improving block processing efficiency on the BSC network.
