JPMorgan Chase Considering Launch of New Stablecoin As Rival Big Banks Build Dollar-Pegged Token: Report

JPMorgan Chase is currently considering the possibility of launching its own stablecoin.

The bank’s exploration is separate from a consortium of 21 banks and financial institutions working on creating a dollar stablecoin for cross-border business payments, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Members of this consortium include Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Santander, and Goldman Sachs.

The goal is to have the project up and running by the first half of 2027, with plans to establish a dedicated company to oversee its operations.

The stablecoin will be pegged to the US dollar initially, with potential expansion to include other Group of Seven currencies in the future. Initially targeting commercial clients, some regions may later offer it to retail customers.

Meanwhile, JPMorgan’s analysis of launching a stablecoin is still in its early stages.

Banks view this initiative as a strategic move to retain business that could be lost to independent stablecoins, especially after the implementation of the Genius Act last year, which established federal regulations for dollar-based tokens and streamlined the process for banks to issue their own coins.

These institutions have also been involved in developing tokenized deposits, a distinct concept from currency-pegged stablecoins, where traditional bank balances are converted into digital tokens.
