Mortgage Rates Today, Thursday, September 10: A Little Higher

Yes, mortgage interest rates are slightly higher today.

The average interest rate on a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage is now 6.79% APR, which is five basis points higher than yesterday and six basis points higher than a week ago. (See chart below for more details.) A basis point is one one-hundredth of a percentage point.

Mortgage rates are on the rise as investors sell government bonds, pushing yields higher. The Treasury Department’s announcement of a larger bond buyback program did not reassure investors, leading to higher mortgage rates. When Treasury note yields increase, mortgage rates tend to follow suit.

For more information on the current factors influencing mortgage rates, continue reading below the chart.

📈 What influences mortgage rates?

Mortgage rates are constantly changing, influenced by factors such as new inflation reports, job numbers, Fed meetings, and global events. Even small changes in the bond market can impact mortgage rates.

Recent events have been driving mortgage rates higher. Three major influences can be summarized as follows: Inflation.

Firstly, the conflict in Iran has caused concerns about trade disruptions, rising oil prices, and inflation, leading to higher bond yields and mortgage rates.

Secondly, Federal Reserve communications, particularly Chair Kevin Warsh’s remarks on inflation, have influenced market expectations of a rate hike at the upcoming Fed meeting.

Last week, strong job growth in the U.S. boosted expectations of a rate hike, as a thriving labor market can support higher interest rates to combat inflation.

Additionally, inflation levels above the Fed’s target rate and upcoming data releases, such as the Consumer Price Index, may further impact mortgage rates in the near future.
