Citi ThankYou Points Now Transfer to JAL

Japan Airlines Mileage Bank miles can now be obtained through transferring Citi ThankYou® points.

Until Oct. 24, 2026, Citi is providing a 30% bonus for transferring points to JAL. This bonus results in a 1:1.3 transfer ratio for eligible Citi ThankYou cards with an annual fee and a 1:0.9 transfer ratio for eligible $0-annual-fee cards. It is recommended to transfer points only when award availability for a specific redemption has been identified.

Citi ThankYou is the latest addition to the list of flexible currencies offering JAL as a transfer partner, following Capital One in September 2025 (4:3 ratio) and Bilt Rewards in May 2025 (1:1 ratio).

The increase in travelers transferring points to JAL, particularly with the introductory transfer bonuses, has led to complaints about the challenge of finding specific redemptions, such as business and first class flights to Japan.

Key Details about Citi’s Latest Transfer Partner

JAL Mileage Bank offers a versatile currency for booking flights on Japan Airlines and its various partners, including Oneworld alliance members and non-alliance partners like Air France and KLM.

The standard transfer ratio for Citi to Japan Airlines is either 1:1 or 1:0.7, depending on the Citi card held. Cards earning ThankYou points with an annual fee typically offer the higher ratio, while those without an annual fee provide the lower ratio.

It’s important to note that JAL miles expire after 36 months with no option for extension.

If planning to redeem JAL miles, creating a JAL Mileage Bank account early is advisable, as new members may have to wait up to 60 days before redeeming points. However, transferring other currencies to JAL has reduced this wait time to as little as seven days, though immediate redemption is not guaranteed.

Is Transferring Citi ThankYou Points to JAL Worth It?

Transferring Citi ThankYou points to Japan Airlines can provide significant value if award availability can be found and the booking platform navigated effectively.

For instance, I managed to redeem 55,000 miles last year for a Japan Airlines business class flight from New York to Tokyo, requiring payment of taxes and fees (approximately $360). This flight would typically cost thousands of dollars.

🤓Nerdy Tip

To find the best availability for Japan Airlines flights, it is often recommended to book when the calendar opens 360 days before departure.

As a general rule, only transfer points if you have a specific redemption in mind.
