(Reuters) – The highly anticipated Pixar sequel, “Inside Out 2,” has shattered records by surpassing the $1 billion mark at the global box office in less than three weeks since its release. This achievement makes it the fastest animated film in history to reach this milestone, announced Walt Disney Co (NYSE:) on Sunday.
According to Disney, the film has not only emerged as the highest-grossing movie of the year but is also the sole film to cross the $1 billion mark, a feat that underscores its immense popularity among audiences worldwide.
“Inside Out 2” continues the story of the 2015 original hit, delving into the complexities of a young girl’s mind. The sequel follows lead character Riley as she navigates the challenges of adolescence, grappling with new emotions such as anxiety and envy.
The first installment, “Inside Out,” made a splash with a $90 million opening weekend in the summer of 2015 and went on to rake in $858.8 million globally.
