Alcohol consumption in the United States remains prevalent, with nearly half of the population aged 12 or older reporting that they consumed alcohol in the past month.

This article, as shared by Visual Capitalist’s Niccolo Conte, delves into the patterns of drinking behavior across the nation, shedding light on the prevalence of drinking, binge drinking, and heavier alcohol consumption levels using data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration as of 2024.

How Many Americans Consume Alcohol Regularly?

Out of the 288.8 million Americans aged 12 or older, 134 million individuals (46.5%) reported drinking alcohol at least once in the past 30 days.

The data table provided below showcases the count of regular alcohol consumers in the U.S., alongside binge drinkers and heavy drinkers.

Binge drinkers are those who have consumed five or more drinks (four for women) on a single occasion, while heavy drinkers are individuals who have engaged in binge drinking at least five times in the past 30 days.

Although nearly half of the U.S. population aged 12 or older consists of alcohol consumers, the percentage in 2024 (46.5%) has slightly decreased from 2022’s 48.7%.

The Count of Binge and Heavy Drinkers in the United States

Among the 134.3 million alcohol consumers in the U.S., 57.9 million people partook in binge drinking, representing 20.1% of the total population and 43.1% of all alcohol users.

This data highlights a substantial overlap between moderate consumption and sporadic high-risk intake, emphasizing the deep-rooted nature of binge drinking within the wider drinking community.

Heavy alcohol users, numbering 14.5 million in America, account for 5% of the total population above 12 years old and 10.8% of alcohol consumers.

While this segment is smaller compared to the broader categories of alcohol and binge drinkers, heavy drinkers constitute a quarter of all binge drinkers and make up one in every ten regular alcohol consumers in the nation.
