Key Takeaways

BlackRock is looking to expand its tokenized product line to include crypto ETFs, stocks, and other assets on-chain, signaling a potential revolution in the financial market.

According to a report by Bloomberg, BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, is considering tokenizing its popular crypto and ETF products for on-chain trading.

While the plan is contingent on regulatory approval, sources familiar with the matter suggest that BlackRock is keen on embracing blockchain technology for its offerings.

BlackRock’s Crypto Ventures

In a span of less than two years, BlackRock’s crypto holdings have skyrocketed to $100 billion since launching its first Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs.

The introduction of the BUIDL tokenized money market fund in March 2024 has been a significant milestone for BlackRock, with a market cap of $2.2 billion and widespread adoption across various chains.

BlackRock’s CEO, Larry Fink, envisions a future where all assets can be tokenized, revolutionizing the investment landscape with uninterrupted markets and instant settlements.

“Every asset can be tokenized… If that happens, investing will be revolutionized. Markets would never need to close. Settlements would be instantaneous.”

Nasdaq has also expressed interest in listing tokenized equities with equal rights as traditional shareholders, seeking regulatory approval for this innovative approach.

While tokenized stocks will still be considered securities, according to SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, they must comply with existing securities laws to ensure investor protection.

Regulators are actively working to establish clear guidelines for tokenized assets amidst growing interest in this emerging market segment.

The potential for tokenization in the financial sector is generating excitement and debate among industry experts, with differing opinions on its value proposition and impact on traditional investment vehicles like ETFs.
