The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced over the weekend that federal agencies have terminated contracts totaling up to $2.8 billion.
A recent post on X, a social media platform, revealed that DOGE terminated 230 contracts deemed wasteful in the past week, resulting in savings of $407 million.
Among the terminated contracts were those with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a “Mexico sustainable landscapes consultant” and the Treasury Department for “mentoring, evaluation, learning specialist services in Haiti,” as detailed in the DOGE post along with screenshots of the programs’ descriptions.
DOGE’s website update earlier this month stated that the task force has saved around $190 billion, translating to approximately $1,180 per taxpayer. Notably, the Department of Health and Human Services, General Services Administration, Education Department, Office of Personnel Management, and Department of Labor have led the way in initiating the most cuts, as per the site’s information.
DOGE’s database reflects the termination of about 11,700 contracts across federal agencies, resulting in an estimated savings of around $44 billion. Additionally, approximately 15,500 federal grants have been slashed, amounting to roughly $44 billion.
The update from DOGE coincides with the Senate’s upcoming vote on spending cuts to claw back $9.4 billion in public media and foreign aid spending. Senate Democrats are attempting to block the measure and are seeking support from a few Republicans.
President Trump has urged lawmakers to rescind nearly $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, equal to its anticipated funding over the next two budget years.
On July 10, Trump warned that he would withdraw his support from any Republican lawmaker opposing the rescissions package, which includes cuts to foreign aid.
Trump emphasized in a Truth Social post that “It is very important that all Republicans adhere to my Rescissions Bill and, in particular, DEFUND THE CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING (PBS and NPR), which is worse than CNN & MSDNC put together.”
He further stated that “any Republican that votes to allow this monstrosity to continue broadcasting will not have my support or Endorsement.”
Besides Trump, the White House has criticized the public media system for its political bias and deemed it an unnecessary expense.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting allocates more than two-thirds of its funding to over 1,500 locally operated public television and radio stations, with the remainder supporting National Public Radio and Public Broadcasting Service for national programming.
The recent update from DOGE indicates ongoing efforts to identify and eliminate fraud, waste, and abuse within the federal government, following Elon Musk’s departure as a former White House special government employee in late May.
Since leaving the administration, Musk, who previously served as a spokesperson and leader for DOGE, has distanced himself from the Trump administration and Republicans, announcing plans to establish his own political party earlier this month.
