Global communication, culture, and economic exchange are heavily influenced by language. Some languages dominate due to large native-speaking populations, while others gain global reach as second languages.
This visual comparison of native and non-native speakers of the world’s most spoken languages in 2025 is provided by Visual Capitalist’s Niccolo Conte using data from Ethnologue.
The World’s Most Spoken First and Second Languages
English leads with around 1.53 billion speakers globally, but only 390 million speak it as their first language. This makes English the dominant lingua franca, with nearly 75% of speakers using it as a second language.

Approximately 18.8% of the global population speaks English, but only a quarter are native speakers.
Mandarin Chinese ranks second with about 1.18 billion speakers, primarily as a first language for more than 83% of its speakers.
Hindi and Spanish follow as widely spoken languages. Hindi has roughly 609 million speakers, evenly split between native and non-native users due to India’s diverse population.
Spanish is predominantly a native language, with almost 87% of its speakers using it as their first language. The language is concentrated in Spain, Latin America, and parts of the United States.
