Russian officials claimed on Wednesday that a massive drone attack from Ukraine targeted a nuclear power plant. Over 100 drones were deployed overnight against various oil and power facilities in one of the largest UAV assaults of the war.
The Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant was reportedly attacked, the largest power plant in Russia’s northwest. Despite the assault, the plant is said to be operating normally. Air defense systems intercepted a drone attempting to strike the nuclear facility in the Smolensk region.
Among the 104 drones used in the attack, at least 11 were destroyed over the Smolensk region. One drone was shot down as it tried to target the nuclear complex, with no casualties or damage reported. The situation has raised concerns as it could potentially lead to a conflict like WW3.
The Zaporizhzhia plant in Ukraine, the largest in Europe, has also faced attempted attacks by drones, but all UAVs were intercepted. Russian officials warned that attacks on nuclear facilities could escalate tensions and trigger a larger conflict.
Recent drone strikes on oil facilities in Russia, including the Kstovo Refinery, have further heightened tensions. Social media videos show a massive fire at the refinery, which is the fourth largest in the country.
Overall, the situation remains volatile as both sides engage in drone attacks on critical infrastructure, risking a potential escalation of the conflict. The threat of man-made disasters at nuclear plants adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing war.
