Florida Appeals Judge's Ruling Against Expansion Of 'Alligator Alcatraz'

Florida Appeals Judge’s Decision to Halt Expansion of ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ Facility

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s administration has filed an appeal against a federal judge’s ruling that put a stop to the expansion of the controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” detention center in the Everglades.

The appeal comes after U.S. Judge Kathleen Williams sided with environmental groups in a lawsuit against the facility, citing concerns about the impact on the Everglades ecosystem and wildlife.

The judge’s ruling mandates the state to cease sending detainees to the facility, prohibits new construction on the site, and orders the dismantling of certain aspects of the facility as current detainees are relocated elsewhere.

Despite the setback, Governor DeSantis remains committed to the mission of deporting illegal immigrants and expressed confidence in the state’s immigration enforcement efforts. He criticized the judge’s decision as biased and vowed to continue working towards deportations.

DeSantis touted the success of Alligator Alcatraz and announced plans to open a new detention center in Baker County named “Deportation Depot,” with a capacity to accommodate up to 2,000 detainees.

The state has filed a notice of appeal with the Eleventh Circuit in response to the ruling, with Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier confirming that the facility will continue to operate to support immigration enforcement efforts.

In her order, Judge Williams emphasized the need to protect the endangered Everglades and ensure compliance with Florida environmental laws. The decision to halt the expansion of the facility aligns with efforts to conserve and restore the Everglades, as supported by various political figures over the years.

The ruling requires the removal of certain infrastructure within 60 days to mitigate the facility’s impact on the sensitive ecosystem.

Overall, the appeal highlights the ongoing legal battle over the expansion of the controversial detention center and the broader implications for immigration enforcement in Florida.
