How do I easily cancel subscriptions?

A frustrated individual on Reddit recently posted about the challenges of canceling a subscription. They had signed up for a service using a work email that was no longer accessible, making it impossible to cancel the subscription.

Dealing with subscription cancellations can be a headache, which is why the Federal Trade Commission is implementing a new rule to make the process easier. Starting later this year, companies will be required to make canceling subscriptions as simple as signing up for them.

According to the FTC, the number of consumer complaints about recurring subscriptions has been on the rise, reaching 70 complaints per day in 2024 compared to 42 per day in 2021.

Chuck Bell, a financial policy advocate at Consumer Reports, emphasizes the importance of companies improving their cancellation processes to better serve consumers.

Utilize the Company’s Name in Your Search

Bell recommends conducting a web search using the company’s name to find specific tips on canceling subscriptions. By learning from others’ experiences, you may discover the right contact information to resolve the issue.

Navigating past automated chatbots to reach a real person is often the first step in resolving subscription cancellation issues, according to Bell.

Escalate Your Complaint if Necessary

If canceling remains challenging, Bell suggests escalating the issue by contacting a senior representative at the company, sharing the problem on social media, or filing a complaint with regulatory agencies like the FTC or Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Another option is to submit a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, which helps resolve consumer-business disputes.

Melanie McGovern, a national spokesperson for the BBB, emphasizes the importance of keeping records and utilizing personal email addresses for subscriptions to simplify the cancellation process.

By maintaining a paper trail and organizing communication related to subscriptions, you can streamline the cancellation process and avoid future challenges.

Reddit is a popular online platform where users discuss various topics, including personal finance. While the experiences shared are anonymous, they offer valuable insights into consumer perspectives on financial matters.
