How to Pack for a Move In a Month

If you’re getting ready to move, whether it’s from a spacious house in Sacramento, CA, or a cozy apartment in Madison, WI, packing doesn’t have to be a last-minute rush. With a month to spare, you can tackle the process in a systematic way that minimizes stress and ensures a smooth transition to your new home.

This guide provides a detailed month-long packing plan, breaking down the tasks week by week, room by room. By following this schedule, you can stay organized, maintain a livable home environment, and avoid the frantic scramble of last-minute packing.

Your one-month, room-by-room packing plan

With a month at your disposal, you have enough time to declutter, pack strategically, and avoid transporting unnecessary items. Here’s a breakdown of how to approach each week:

Week one: Start with storage and least used spaces

Kick off the packing process by tackling areas that don’t impact your daily routine:

  • Basement
  • Attic
  • Garage
  • Guest room
  • Outdoor storage
  • Hall closets

Pack away items like seasonal decorations, old paperwork, and infrequently used tools. Starting with these low-traffic areas can provide quick wins and clear visual clutter.

Week two: Work from room to room

Focus on one room at a time, completing the packing process before moving on to the next. This approach includes:

  • Packing miscellaneous decorations and wall art
  • Sorting and labeling drawer contents
  • Packing shoes that aren’t worn regularly
  • Emptying linen closets and backup toiletries

Week three: Pack living areas and disassemble infrequently used furniture

Now it’s time to pack items that are used occasionally but can be set aside for a week or two:

  • Extra electronics
  • Side tables and lamps
  • Guest bed frames
  • Extra shelving
  • Patio furniture
  • Large modular pieces

When disassembling furniture, take photos of the setup before unplugging any cables. Keep screws and brackets in labeled bags taped directly to the furniture for easy reassembly.

Week four (early): Pack kitchen and bathrooms in phases

Don’t leave the kitchen and bathrooms until the last minute. Start early in the week with:

Kitchen (early week):

  • Packing pantry extras and backup staples
  • Boxing up small appliances that are rarely used
  • Packing servingware, specialty tools, and décor

Bathrooms (early week):

  • Discarding expired products
  • Packing backups and bulk items
  • Setting aside a small daily-use kit

Week four (final days): Pack daily essentials last

In the final 48 hours before moving, focus on packing:

  • Everyday cookware
  • Daily toiletries
  • Bedding for the night before the move
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Medications

By following this packing plan, you can maintain a sense of order and efficiency throughout the moving process, ensuring a smooth transition to your new home.
