The Tharsis Labs team, funded by the Interchain Foundation, is set to release an open-source evmOS, a layer 1 solution compatible with Ethereum aimed at enhancing interoperability between Ethereum and Cosmos.
This funding will enable Tharsis Labs to open-source evmOS, allowing Cosmos’ (ATOM) functionalities to be accessible to Ethereum (ETH) network users.
The Interchain Foundation, known for its efforts to advance the Cosmos ecosystem and the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol, announced this development on March 18.
With evmOS, developers can create EVM-powered decentralized applications and chains using the Cosmos software development kit. Tharsis Labs will release the Ethereum virtual machine-compatible software under the Apache 2.0 license, as per the Interchain Foundation.
In this instance, the ICF will fork evmOS’ technology and rebrand it as Cosmos EVM, allowing the steward of the Cosmos ecosystem to continue developing the project.

Cosmos EVM will be incorporated into the Interchain Stack and developed by the Interchain Labs team.
“We believe this is the best course of action for the community and the longevity of our code. We are grateful for the ICF’s support and I am excited to contribute in a strategic advisory capacity,” stated Federico Kunze Küllmer, co-founder of evmOS and representative of Tharsis Labs.
According to the ICF, open-sourcing the technology will facilitate further integration of the forked tech stack, enabling permissionless innovation in the space. The integration of evmOS as the primary EVM solution for Cosmos aims to provide benefits like cross-chain communication for scaling DeFi applications.
Despite the funding and forking of evmOS, the ICF affirms its commitment to the project’s roadmap. In addition to Ethereum compatibility, the Interchain Foundation aims to make evmOS a solution that all proof-of-stake networks can leverage for enhanced web3 adoption.
“evmOS has played a crucial role in bridging the Ethereum and Cosmos ecosystems, and we are thrilled to support its ongoing development under the Interchain Foundation umbrella,” said Josh Cincinnati, president of the ICF’s Foundation Council.
Last year in July, LayerZero Labs partnered with Initia Labs to establish an interoperability standard for Cosmos, aiming to bring omnichain interoperability to Cosmos SDK and LayerZero-enabled chains.
