Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world
Two recent photographs depict the ongoing competition between the US and China in a resource-rich region.
In one image, President Xi Jinping takes a prominent position alongside his Latin American host, while President Joe Biden is situated towards the back. In the second image, Biden is absent, with US diplomats explaining that the photo was taken before his arrival.
These images symbolize the shift in power from the US to China in Latin America, a region that was historically considered America’s backyard.
The competition between the two superpowers is significant due to the vast resources in Latin America, such as lithium, copper, oil, water, and forests.
During a state visit to Peru, Xi Jinping led a delegation to inaugurate a $3.5bn port project aimed at transforming shipping from Latin America to China. In contrast, Biden announced a smaller aid package for anti-drug efforts and transportation infrastructure in Lima.
China’s increasing trade and investment in Latin America have positioned Beijing as the region’s main economic partner, with a focus on key sectors like mining, energy, and infrastructure.
Despite US concerns about China’s influence in the region, Washington’s response has been limited. The Trump administration’s return to power is expected to further bolster China’s economic presence in Latin America.
Experts believe that Trump’s policies may hinder US trade and investment in the region, leading to increased tensions between Latin American countries and China.
