Russia has expressed strong support for President Trump’s 20-point peace plan for Gaza, which is currently being discussed in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov praised the plan as the best option for Arab countries and one that Israel is unlikely to reject, according to state media.
Lavrov noted that while Trump’s plan includes the mention of statehood, it primarily focuses on the Gaza Strip and does not address the West Bank. Despite this limitation, Lavrov acknowledged the plan as the most viable option at present.
He criticized Israel for imposing collective punishment on Palestinians in response to Hamas’ actions, calling it a violation of international humanitarian law. The ongoing negotiations are expected to face challenges, particularly regarding the disarmament of Hamas and the governance of the Strip.
Trump hinted at the possibility of traveling to the Middle East if a deal is reached, emphasizing the importance of peace in the region. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also conveyed optimism about a potential breakthrough in the negotiations.
“Peace for the Middle East is within reach, and I believe that progress is being made,” Trump stated, expressing confidence in the negotiating teams on both sides. He emphasized the importance of reaching a deal for the benefit of all parties involved.
