The recent detention of an illegal immigrant named Jesus Terán by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has sparked a controversial comparison to Jesus Christ, the famous carpenter and Son of God.
Terán was taken into custody during an ICE appointment on July 8. He had previously been denied entry to the U.S. in 2015 but was allowed in under the Biden administration in 2021.
While Terán’s situation is not uncommon among illegal immigrants entering the country under the current administration’s immigration policies, some media personalities have focused on his name, leading to the Jesus Christ comparisons.

“His Name Is Jesus. He’s a Carpenter. ICE Arrested Him,” read a headline from The Bulwark’s Adrian Carrasquillo. The article, which repeatedly referred to Terán by his first name, included an image of a hand cuffed to a crucifix.
The controversial reference to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ led to widespread ridicule on social media.
User Nick Rizzuto responded to The Bulwark’s Sam Stein with: “His name is Mohammed. He’s a Pedophile. Police arrested him.”
Another user mocked Stein, saying, “My name is Sam. I like MSNBC. I treat the Bible eisegetically.”
Several memes were shared online, satirizing the left’s use of religious imagery to defend illegal immigration.
