It may come as a surprise to many, but recent findings reveal that liberal women in the United States are facing a significant level of unhappiness. According to a 2024 poll conducted by the American Family Survey, only 12% of liberal women express satisfaction with their lives, and they are three times more likely to experience loneliness compared to their conservative counterparts.
This data echoes numerous studies that have shown a consistent decline in happiness among progressive women in Western societies, despite the increased independence they have gained over the years.
Brad Wilcox, a sociology professor at the University of Virginia and a fellow at the Institute for Family Studies, analyzed the survey data and suggested a couple of reasons why conservative women tend to be happier than liberal women. “Research indicates that conservative women are more likely to embrace a sense of agency and view themselves as captains of their own fate, rather than victims of external forces,” Wilcox explained in an interview with Fox News Digital. He added that conservative women are less likely to catastrophize about public events and concerns.
The survey also highlights that conservative women are more accepting of biological and social differences between genders. This traditional view, which was widely accepted for centuries, has faced criticism in recent years from feminist movements labeling it as a product of the patriarchy. The erosion of traditional societal norms has led to the incorporation of intersectional feminist ideologies into legislation across Western nations, penalizing dissenters.
The rise of feminist ideologies, however, has had an unexpected consequence on the happiness of women. Studies dating back to 2009, such as the one conducted by the University of Pennsylvania, have shown a decline in the happiness of young women despite increased opportunities in the job market and society. While these studies do not directly attribute the decline in happiness to feminism, they suggest that modern constructs may contribute to heightened anxiety among women.
While men have also experienced a decline in personal happiness in recent years, their financial opportunities have remained relatively stable. In contrast, women have seen a substantial increase in financial and social opportunities, yet their happiness levels have plummeted even further than men’s.
The American Family Survey sheds light on the root of this happiness decline by examining women based on their ideological beliefs. Contrary to popular belief, it is not conservative women who are contributing to this decline, but rather liberal women.
Historically, men were primarily responsible for providing for their families while women focused on managing the household. Men are more inclined to compartmentalize risks and anxieties, particularly in their roles as providers and protectors. This traditional structure seemed to bring happiness to both men and women, with men fulfilling their roles as providers and women as nurturers.
It is possible that liberal women today are experiencing a similar discontent because they are not fulfilling their biological roles. In essence, both men and women may have been happier under the traditional family structure, where men provided and protected, and women cared for the home and children.
