Mike Lee Proposes Constitutional Amendment to Oust Congress When Deficit is Too High

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) has introduced a proposed constitutional amendment that would disqualify all members of Congress from running for reelection if inflation exceeds 3% or if the deficit surpasses 3% of GDP. This idea, originally suggested by Warren Buffett over a decade ago, aims to address the nation’s economic health by holding lawmakers accountable. In a recent Twitter post, Lee emphasized the importance of prioritizing the nation’s well-being over political interests.

While some GOP Senators, including Lee, have expressed concerns about the current tax and spending measures, the House of Representatives has passed President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBB) for Senate review. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the spending bill, emphasizing the need for gradual fiscal adjustments to balance spending cuts and economic growth.

Elon Musk has voiced support for Buffett’s proposal to address the deficit crisis and has advocated for increased government efficiency and transparency. Despite differing opinions on specific spending cuts, Republican leaders are working towards finalizing the reconciliation bill for presidential approval by July 4th.
