Russian authorities have reported a significant Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow on Sunday, a rare occurrence of such deep aerial assaults in Russian territory. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that Russian air defenses intercepted 13 drones approaching the capital, with regional officials noting a wave of UAV attacks across western Russia. One drone was shot down near Moscow, and a total of 13 UAVs targeting the capital area were destroyed by air defenses. Emergency crews responded to debris sites, while Domodedovo airport briefly halted operations before resuming. Aviation hubs in the Moscow region have faced delays and stoppages in the past year, causing frustration among travelers. In Bryansk Oblast, Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz reported 120 downed UAVs in sustained drone assaults. The Defense Ministry stated that air defenses intercepted 102 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones in southern Russia, including some allegedly heading towards Moscow. Repeat drone attacks on Moscow could prompt a military response on the Ukrainian capital, potentially exacerbating power shortages in Kyiv Oblast. Winter conditions in Ukraine have worsened with subzero temperatures, power outages, and water shortages, creating humanitarian challenges.
