My Antarctica Cruise on National Geographic Explorer

I have always dreamt of visiting the bottom of the world, and Antarctica was at the top of my travel list for years. When I came across a new expedition option to Antarctica on the National Geographic Explorer, I didn’t hesitate to sign up. Finally, I was on my way to becoming a part of the “seven continents club.”

The experience was nothing short of incredible.

In December 2024, I embarked on a 10-day cruise to Antarctica as part of a longer South American adventure that included Argentina, Antarctica, and three locations in Chile, including the remote Easter Island with its iconic Moai statues.

The statues, the mesmerizing icebergs, the playful penguins, and the friendships I formed made this journey truly unforgettable.

Booking process

Nat Geo and Lindblad have been partners in expedition cruising for over 20 years. With Lindblad’s fleet of 20 ships and National Geographic’s commitment to science, exploration, education, and storytelling, the collaboration promises a unique and enriching experience.

Antarctica had been on my travel radar for some time, and the new sail and fly option with National Geographic-Lindblad caught my attention. This innovative itinerary allowed me to sail across the challenging Drake Passage and then fly back from Antarctica to South America, minimizing travel time and potential rough sea conditions.

While the cost of a trip to Antarctica is significant, starting at around $12,000 per person, the unique experiences and memories created are truly priceless. After thorough research and deliberation, booking my expedition through the Duke University alumni association travel program was a decision I didn’t regret.

Communication before the cruise was a bit underwhelming, with some confusion and lack of clarity in the information provided. However, the experience onboard the National Geographic Explorer more than made up for it.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Nat Geo/Lindblad provides each guest with a parka and insulated jacket, essential for the Antarctic conditions. Ordering your parka before the cruise ensures the right fit, but extras are available onboard if needed.

Many aspects of the trip required reaching out to Lindblad for clarity and guidance, a sentiment shared by my fellow travelers. However, once onboard, the communication and organization were impeccable.

Embarkation in Ushuaia, Argentina, was seamless, with a smooth transition from the airport to the ship. The onboard experience on the National Geographic Explorer was nothing short of exceptional.

Embarkation

Arriving in Ushuaia and boarding the National Geographic Explorer marked the beginning of an unforgettable journey. The ship’s compact size but thoughtful design provided all the amenities and comforts needed for a successful expedition.

Exploring the various decks and facilities on the ship revealed a well-equipped vessel ready for the challenges of the Antarctic waters. The expedition staff’s expertise and dedication added an extra layer of assurance and excitement to the voyage.

🤓Nerdy Tip

The number of passengers on an Antarctic expedition can significantly impact the overall experience. Smaller ships like the National Geographic Explorer offer the opportunity for more intimate and immersive encounters with the Antarctic environment.

The compact yet efficient design of the National Geographic Explorer ensured a comfortable and engaging experience for all passengers. The ship’s stability and ice-reinforced hull provided a sense of security amid the icy Antarctic waters.

My cabin, located on the main deck, offered a cozy retreat with all the necessary amenities for a restful stay. The spacious layout, thoughtful storage solutions, and well-appointed bathroom added to the overall comfort and convenience of the accommodation.
