My Teen Loves ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ — and So Do I

My 14-year-old daughter couldn’t stop talking about the Netflix animated film “KPop Demon Hunters,” featuring a Korean girl band fighting demons to save human souls. At first, I didn’t pay much attention.

But after multiple viewings, she insisted we watch it together as a family. Despite my initial skepticism, I found the movie quite enjoyable. The clever storyline, catchy music, and themes of resilience and identity struck a chord with me.

It turns out, we’re not the only ones impressed by “KPop Demon Hunters.” The film has become Netflix’s most-watched movie ever, with its soundtrack dominating the Billboard Hot 100 and TikTok filled with fan-made videos.

In summary, as my daughter puts it, “it’s breaking the world.”

Why ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ resonates

“KPop Demon Hunters” has captivated audiences for several reasons. The collaboration with the creators of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” ensures top-notch animation and character designs that fans appreciate.

Moreover, the high-energy soundtrack, inspired by real K-pop groups, leaves a lasting impression on viewers, earning the film a special place in their hearts.

However, the film’s impact goes beyond aesthetics and music. It promotes themes of acceptance and personal growth, resonating with audiences of all ages.

As BW’s Karen Gaudette Brewer puts it, “‘KPop Demon Hunters’ encourages individuals to embrace their true selves to become their best selves.”

The money side of fandom

Unsurprisingly, Netflix is capitalizing on the immense popularity of “KPop Demon Hunters.” From theatrical sing-along screenings to a range of merchandise, the company is leveraging the fan frenzy to its advantage.

Fans can now purchase a variety of movie-themed products, including clothing, accessories, and collectibles. The introduction of Funko POP! figures adds to the growing list of merchandise options.

Furthermore, discussions about a possible sequel are underway, keeping fans excited about what’s to come.

Despite already owning merchandise, some fans, like BW’s Alex Rosenberg’s daughter, are eager to expand their collections without hesitation.

As Rosenberg shares, his daughter plans to proudly display her “KPop Demon Hunters” gear to showcase her love for the film.

Pop culture as a family bridge

Beyond its commercial success, “KPop Demon Hunters” serves as a bonding experience for families. Watching and enjoying the film together creates lasting memories and sparks conversations about music and culture.

For many parents, like BW’s Johanna Arnone and Julie Myhre-Nunes, sharing the film with their children opens up opportunities to explore new interests and connect on a deeper level.

As for me, watching “KPop Demon Hunters” with my daughter not only allowed me to understand her passion but also brought us closer together. It’s a film we’ll cherish and revisit in the future.
