Rachel Reeves pushes for Britain to speed up closer ties with EU

Rachel Reeves is determined to capture the “biggest prize” in global trade by strengthening ties with the EU, as the UK chancellor prepares to avoid a potential clash with Brussels over habitat rules.

Revealing plans for closer economic and security connections with the EU, Reeves emphasized the importance of reversing Brexit, stating: “The biggest opportunity lies with the EU. The economic reality is that gravity pulls us towards closer integration.”

Reeves stated that Britain is willing to unilaterally align with EU regulations in order to enhance trade with the bloc.

In a shift in strategy, the chancellor is expected to scale back recommendations to scrap certain habitat and wildlife regulations to expedite infrastructure projects.

Reeves aims to steer clear of dismantling regulations that existed before Brexit, as doing so could lead to a conflict with the EU and hinder progress towards the single market.

After a period of political upheaval in Westminster, Reeves and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer are reassuring businesses and Labour MPs of their commitment to reestablishing UK-EU economic ties.

Speaking at the London School of Economics event organized by the Brussels-based Bruegel think-tank, Reeves highlighted the significance of closer integration with Europe, citing the US, China, and Europe as the three major economic blocs.

Reeves has previously expressed her readiness to align with EU standards to facilitate trade in key sectors like chemicals.

Reeves is pushing for increased collaboration with the EU through sector-specific alignment, whether through negotiations or unilateral decisions.

She stressed the need for countries to work together and build alliances based on shared values rather than erecting barriers.

Starmer is set to deliver a pro-European speech at the Munich Security Conference, where he is expected to discuss European defense cooperation.

Reeves expressed frustration at the slow progress in discussions with other European nations on defense collaboration and emphasized the urgency of cooperation in this area.

As part of efforts to strengthen UK-EU relations, Reeves is advocating for an ambitious youth mobility scheme to allow more young Europeans to work in the UK.

Reeves is urging the EU not to exclude British companies from its “made in Europe” initiative, emphasizing the need for inclusion based on shared values.

As part of the broader reset of relations initiated last year, Reeves is advocating for an ambitious youth mobility scheme to allow more young Europeans to work in the UK.

An early test of the UK’s EU strategy will come when Reeves responds to a report recommending the reduction of red tape in nuclear power station construction.

The chancellor has criticized regulations protecting wildlife at the expense of infrastructure development but is cautious of jeopardizing access to the single market.

Under the EU-UK post-Brexit Trade and Cooperation Agreement, both sides agreed not to lower their labor, social, and environmental standards below December 2020 levels.

Valdis Dombrovskis, EU finance commissioner, expressed openness to discussing British proposals to remove post-Brexit trade barriers after meeting with Reeves.
