June 30 marked World Social Media Day.

A survey conducted between September and October 2025 revealed that 50 percent of teenage girls aged 13 to 17 believe that social media negatively impacts their sleep, compared to 40 percent of boys in the same age group.

According to a report by Anna Fleck from Statista, teenage girls are more prone than boys to experience adverse effects from social media on various aspects such as sleep, self-confidence, productivity, and mental health, as indicated by a recent study conducted by the Pew Research Center.

Similarly, there is a gender gap concerning mental health issues, with 25 percent of girls and 14 percent of boys reporting negative impacts.

Interestingly, the majority of respondents stated that social media platforms neither positively nor negatively affected their mental health.

Approximately one in five teenagers of both genders acknowledged that social media had a detrimental effect on their academic performance.

However, when it comes to friendships, teens expressed a more positive sentiment.

Overall, 30 percent of teenagers mentioned that social media has had a positive impact on their friendships to some extent.

Girls were slightly more inclined to believe that social media has harmed their friendships, with 9 percent compared to 5 percent of boys.

According to Pew, there were no significant gender variations among teens who believe that social media has benefited any of the aspects highlighted in this study.
