Pancreatic cancer, often referred to as the “king of cancer” due to its aggressive nature, presents challenges in early detection and treatment. Understanding the causes and symptoms of this disease is crucial for prevention. Rong Shu, a seasoned traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, shared insights on the causes, early symptoms, and prevention strategies for pancreatic cancer on The Epoch Times’ “Health 1+1” program.

The Pancreas: A Dual-Function Organ

In Western medicine, the pancreas serves as both a digestive and endocrine organ. It plays a vital role in breaking down food and regulating blood sugar levels. From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, the pancreas is part of the spleen system, responsible for nutrient digestion and energy distribution in the body.

Sugar and Its Link to Pancreatic Cancer

Historical Chinese medical texts associate sweetness with the spleen. While moderate sweetness is beneficial, excessive sugar consumption can lead to spleen damage, potentially contributing to cancer development. Studies have shown a strong connection between sugar intake and pancreatic cancer, highlighting the importance of monitoring sugar levels for prevention.

Challenges in Early Detection and Treatment

The pancreas’ hidden location makes early detection of pancreatic cancer challenging. Tumors often go unnoticed until they have spread to other organs, reducing treatment options and survival rates. Recent advancements in detection models offer hope for improved early diagnosis and intervention.

Limited Treatment Options and TCM as an Adjunctive Therapy

Pancreatic cancer cells are resistant to conventional treatments, making complete cure difficult. Traditional Chinese medicine can complement Western treatments by alleviating symptoms and enhancing patients’ quality of life. Integrating TCM into treatment plans may provide additional benefits for pancreatic cancer patients.

Early Symptoms, Risk Factors, and Preventive Measures

Recognizing early symptoms, understanding risk factors, and adopting preventive measures are essential in combating pancreatic cancer. Lifestyle adjustments such as reducing sugar intake, eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, and managing stress play a crucial role in prevention.
