Sui to Become a Bitcoin Secured Network via Babylon’s Phase 3

TL;DR

  • Sui is set to integrate Babylon’s Bitcoin staking protocol in Phase 3 of its expansion plan, transforming into a Bitcoin Secured Network.
  • This integration eliminates the need for bridges or custodians for BTC staking.
  • Babylon will overlay its protocol onto Sui’s Mysticeti consensus, enhancing its multi-network Proof-of-Stake approach.

Sui has announced its partnership with Babylon to incorporate the Bitcoin staking protocol and transition into a Bitcoin Secured Network (BSN).

This collaboration is a key aspect of Phase 3 of Babylon’s growth strategy, set to be unveiled by the year’s end. This decision marks a significant shift in how Proof-of-Stake networks can leverage Bitcoin’s security and liquidity without compromising fund custody.

How Does the Integration Function?

Babylon’s protocol allows users to stake BTC without relinquishing control to third parties, and without the necessity for bridges or wrapped assets. This setup enables Bitcoin holders to directly participate in securing the Sui network and earn rewards without transferring their funds off the main chain. This integration establishes an operational connection between both networks and opens avenues for new decentralized applications and services that capitalize on Bitcoin’s security and Sui’s scalability.

Sui Aims to Mobilize Bitcoin Capital

Sui, currently ranked as the seventh-largest Proof-of-Stake network by CoinGecko, is embracing this strategy in line with a growing trend: more projects are seeking to enhance Bitcoin’s utility beyond its role as a store of value. The objective is to direct BTC capital into programmable environments that yield returns and bolster other decentralized infrastructures. For Bitcoin users, this offers a means to activate a traditionally passive asset without compromising self-custody.

Babylon post

Babylon has previously integrated its technology with various consensus frameworks such as Cosmos, OP Stack, and Arbitrum. In the case of Sui, it will implement its protocol over the Mysticeti mechanism, a solution that leverages DAG-based parallel block production and offers substantial processing capacity. This adaptation underscores the adaptability of Babylon’s model and its objective to deliver modular security to diverse Proof-of-Stake networks
