The issue of housing affordability will be a key focus in the upcoming presidential election, with swing states playing a crucial role in determining the next president and the future of housing costs.

Since the 2020 election, mortgage rates and selling prices have surged to new highs in swing states, as reported by Redfin on Tuesday.

Redfin’s 2024 swing states include Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina, where the issue of housing affordability will be pivotal in determining the future president and housing costs.

Redfin Senior Economist Elijah de la Campa stated, “Voters in swing states care about housing affordability because soaring home prices and mortgage rates, along with a shortage of homes for sale, have made homeownership feel impossible for some Americans.”

According to a Redfin report, monthly housing payments in swing states have nearly doubled, while median home sale prices have increased by approximately 40 percent, reaching an all-time high in 2024.

Redfin’s analysis of housing-market data and incomes for blue, red, and swing states from 2016-2024 shows a significant increase in housing prices, making homeownership less attainable for many Americans.

It is evident that housing affordability will be a critical issue in the upcoming presidential election, especially in swing states, where the future of housing costs will play a significant role in determining the next president.

During the period from 2016 to 2020, swing states experienced a significant 40 percent increase in average home prices, while blue states and red states saw increases of 27 percent and 28 percent respectively.

Looking ahead to the 2024 election, President Biden unveiled a plan aimed at reducing housing costs, while Donald Trump discussed a strategy to address the housing market.
