Tariff-Proof Toys: My Guide to Thrifting Christmas 2025

This holiday season, I decided to take a different approach to gift shopping for my kids. Instead of browsing through Amazon’s Big Deal Days, I opted for thrifting. With toy prices expected to rise due to tariffs, I wanted to alleviate some of the financial stress that comes with this expensive time of year.

The secondhand market provides a budget-friendly and eco-friendly alternative. By exploring thrift stores, kids’ resale chains, and online marketplaces, I’ve been able to find gifts that my children will adore at a fraction of the regular retail prices.

Why thrifting makes sense in this economy

While shopping secondhand for kids’ items may seem like a simple way to save, the potential savings might surprise you. The impact of tariffs has led to increased prices for new baby gear and other essentials, as many of these items are manufactured in China, a country heavily affected by the current policies.

According to a congressional analysis, new parents in the U.S. are now paying 24% more for popular baby items since the tariffs took effect.

In addition to baby essentials, toy prices are also expected to rise this holiday season due to tariffs on imports. It’s essential for toy shoppers to be strategic in finding the best deals amidst these price increases.

Elizabeth Renter, BW’s senior economist, emphasizes the importance of being discerning when shopping for toys during this time.

Find secondhand shops in store and online

To uncover the best deals, it’s crucial to know where to look and determine your preferred shopping method. Whether you prefer browsing through physical stores or online marketplaces, there are various options to explore.

For individuals residing in areas with numerous secondhand stores and kids’ resale chains, frequent visits over several weeks or months can yield great finds. Alternatively, online platforms like Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and Mercari offer convenience and the ability to search for specific items from the comfort of your home.

By using precise search terms and filters, you can locate quality items at significant discounts.

Set your intentions for gifting

After identifying your preferred secondhand shopping locations, it’s essential to strategize your holiday gift approach.

To avoid overspending, I established a simple rule for gift-giving: something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read. This method helps me focus on selecting gifts that complement my kids’ existing interests and encourage interactive play.

For example, my shopping list includes a train table, train set, and Little People farm set for my son, dress-up clothes and a STEM learning game for my daughter, and a selection of books tailored to their individual preferences.

By following this strategy, I aim to make thoughtful and cost-effective gift choices for my children.

Hunt for tariff-proof toys

My initial stop was at a local church’s annual kids’ consignment sale, where I found great deals on items like a Frozen dress-up gown and an Osmo learning game. Although not every item was a bargain, I managed to secure significant savings on various toys and clothing.

Exploring nearby consignment shops also led me to discover big-ticket items at discounted prices. By combining in-store finds with online purchases from outlets like Book Outlet, I’ve been able to save a substantial amount while fulfilling my children’s holiday wishes.

Overall, my thrifting efforts have allowed me to acquire a wide range of toys and books at a fraction of their retail value, providing me with substantial savings as I continue my holiday shopping journey.

Secondhand safety tips

While thrifting can offer substantial savings, it’s crucial to prioritize safety when purchasing certain items secondhand.

Consumer Reports suggests buying safety-critical items like car seats, strollers, and cribs new whenever possible due to potential safety risks associated with secondhand products.

Using resources like the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website can help you verify product safety and identify potential recalls before making a purchase. When shopping secondhand, it’s recommended to focus on items like clothes, toys, and books, while avoiding vintage toys that may contain harmful substances.

Tips for thrifting holiday gifts

Thrifting can be a practical and rewarding way to shop for holiday gifts. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Start early: The best finds go quickly, so it’s beneficial to begin your search early and check back frequently for new arrivals.

  • Shop with a plan: Determine what you need in advance to avoid overspending. Common secondhand finds include a variety of toys, clothing, and gear.

  • Inspect before buying: Ensure that used items are in good condition and all parts are intact. Check for safety recalls and avoid purchasing items with unknown histories.

  • Broaden your search: Explore thrift stores beyond your immediate area to discover unique finds.

  • Mix thrifted with new: Combine secondhand treasures with new items to create thoughtful and cost-effective gift sets.
