Finding Affordable Housing and Childcare for Renters with Children

As rents soar and childcare costs rise, families are struggling to make ends meet. With childcare expenses surpassing rent in some cases, finding a balance between affordable housing and childcare is crucial. Here are some insights on where renters with children can find relief:

Recent reports show that the high cost of childcare is a leading factor in families having fewer children. With 40% of families finding childcare unaffordable, the financial strain is evident. The typical family spends between 9% and 16% of their income on childcare, well above the recommended threshold of 7% set by the government.

Childcare costs have skyrocketed by 263% since 1990, outpacing inflation by a large margin. Despite federal grants aimed at assisting underserved families, a staggering 88% of eligible children do not receive financial aid.

Simultaneously, housing costs have also seen a significant increase. Rents have risen by 21% since before the pandemic, further exacerbating the financial burden on families. The combined impact of rising housing and childcare costs is pushing the overall cost of raising a child to new heights.

To address these challenges, we’ve identified the 10 most affordable cities for renters with children, based on the combined monthly cost of rent and childcare for families making the local median income.

1. Houston, TX

  • Share of income spent on childcare + rent: 26.4%
  • Average monthly childcare + rent costs: $1,984 ($735 + $1,249)
  • Median monthly household income: $7,514

Houston emerges as the most affordable major city for renters with children, thanks to its relatively low rent prices. Families in Houston spend a smaller share of their income on housing and childcare compared to other cities, making it an attractive option for those seeking affordability.

Despite its affordability, many families in Houston still face challenges due to rising childcare costs, highlighting the ongoing struggle for many households.

At the state level, the childcare crisis is evident, with thousands of families on waitlists for subsidies, leading to financial strains and workforce participation issues.
