Written by Jim Rennacci,

Being a former member of Congress and a lifelong Republican, I have closely followed the ongoing drama surrounding the election of a new Speaker of the House with a mix of frustration and interest. The stakes are incredibly high—not just for the Republican Party, but for the future of our nation. The recent endorsement of Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) for the position by former President Donald Trump has only added more fuel to the already fiery debate within our party, sparking both support and dissent among conservative circles.

A vocal critic of this endorsement, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), has raised a crucial point by drawing parallels between this endorsement and Trump’s support of then-Speaker Paul Ryan back in 2017. For many conservatives, Ryan’s time as Speaker represented a period of frustration and disappointment. Ryan’s leadership often hindered Trump’s agenda, which is why Massie’s comparison resonates with so many conservatives. Massie’s words serve as a reminder that we cannot afford to repeat history, especially when so much is at stake.

Trump’s Endorsement: A Calculated Gamble

While Trump’s endorsement of Johnson is not unwarranted, endorsements can have both positive and negative consequences.

Trump remains a significant figure within the Republican Party, but his support often polarizes. The division between staunch Trump supporters and those seeking a more independent path within the GOP could deepen further.

If Johnson is elected as Speaker, every decision he makes will be scrutinized through the lens of Trump’s influence, for better or for worse.

Conversely, if Johnson’s decisions start to resemble those of the Ryan era, Trump risks repeating past mistakes from his first term.

The Legacy of Paul Ryan

Massie’s comparison to Paul Ryan serves as a poignant reminder of what happens when expectations clash with reality.

Trump’s endorsement of Ryan was a strategic move to solidify Republican leadership, but it ultimately backfired.

Many conservatives felt let down as Ryan’s priorities diverged from Trump’s vision, especially on crucial issues like healthcare reform and immigration.

The lesson here is clear: loyalty to Trump’s agenda must go beyond mere words. The next Speaker must not only resonate with the party’s base but also deliver tangible results. Anything less would be perceived as a failure, with potentially devastating consequences for the Speaker and the broader conservative movement.

An Empty House: The Political Ramifications

Beyond the internal dynamics of the GOP, the absence of a Speaker has profound implications for our country. A leaderless House is an ineffective House, incapable of passing legislation, conducting oversight, or addressing the urgent issues facing the American people.

Most crucially for Trump and his supporters, the lack of a Speaker could impact the certification of the 2024 presidential election. It’s no secret that Trump is eyeing a return to the White House, and a functional House of Representatives is vital for his path back. Without a Speaker, the legislative mechanisms needed to certify the next president come to a standstill.

This harsh reality should serve as a wake-up call to every Republican in Congress. Whether you are a loyal Trump supporter or a pragmatic conservative, the call for unity has never been more urgent.

The Path Ahead

The GOP is facing a pivotal moment. Electing a Speaker is not just about filling a position—it’s about setting a course for the future of our party and our nation. While Johnson’s candidacy shows promise, it must be approached cautiously.

If elected, Johnson must demonstrate his ability to rise above division and govern effectively. He must learn from the mistakes of past Speakers and forge a coalition that includes both the party’s base and its moderate members. Above all, he must show that he can deliver concrete results, not just empty promises.

For Trump, this endorsement is a risky move. If Johnson succeeds, it will reinforce Trump’s influence within the GOP and provide a significant boost to his 2024 campaign. However, if Johnson falters, it will serve as a stark reminder that even the most well-intentioned endorsements can have unintended repercussions.

As Republicans, we owe it to our constituents and the future of our nation to get this right. The election of a Speaker is more than a political competition; it’s a test of our leadership capabilities. Let’s hope we rise to the occasion.
