President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans to revoke the security clearances of 51 former intelligence officials who were discovered to have collaborated with the 2020 Biden campaign to discredit damaging allegations found on Hunter Biden’s laptop regarding his family’s alleged corruption.
As reported by Fox News, Trump is set to take action against these individuals, dubbed the "Spies Who Lie," as part of a series of executive orders to be signed upon his return to the Oval Office. The move comes after federal investigators confirmed the authenticity of Hunter’s laptop and a report from the House Select Subcommittee detailed the coordinated effort to mislead the public.
The investigation revealed that the initiative to release the statement came from a call by top Biden campaign official and current Secretary of State Antony Blinken to former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell. Morell admitted that the call from Blinken spurred his decision to draft the statement, with the goal of providing a defense for Biden in the face of potential attacks from Trump.
Furthermore, the report uncovered that high-ranking CIA officials, including then-Director Gina Haspel, were aware of the statement prior to its release, and some of its signatories were under active contract with the CIA at the time. Internal concerns were also raised within the agency regarding the political nature of the statement.
The developments surrounding this controversy are sure to make for an eventful week ahead.
