Turkey has quietly halted exports to Russia of US military-related hardware after warnings from the US. The move comes as Ankara has adjusted its customs systems to block the export of certain goods deemed crucial to Moscow’s war efforts in Ukraine. This includes civilian parts like microchips and remote control systems that are allegedly being used in weaponry.
The decision to block these exports was not publicly announced due to political sensitivities. However, it signifies a shift in Turkey’s stance as a lifeline for Russia amid western sanctions. Turkish banks have also reduced their business with Russian entities following threats of sanctions from the US.
The US has been urging Turkey to take action against the trade in military-related goods with Russia. Turkish exports of these goods surged after the invasion of Ukraine but have since declined, partly due to a shift in exports through intermediary countries.
China remains the largest supplier of high-priority goods to Russia, while India’s exports have increased significantly, driven by a rise in the flow of computers and computing components.
Overall, the trade curbs imposed by Turkey reflect international efforts to restrict Russia’s access to western technology used in its military systems.
