UK Gov’t ‘Disinfo’ Unit Shifts From Lockdown Dissenters To Spying On Mass Migration Critics

The UK government’s disinformation unit, previously focused on monitoring COVID lockdown dissenters, has now shifted its attention to spying on critics of mass migration and ‘asylum’ hotels. The National Security and Online Information Team (NSOIT) is the revamped outfit lobbying social media platforms like TikTok to take action against users sharing “concerning narratives” about immigration and policing issues. This unit, formerly known as the Counter Disinformation Unit, operates within the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology.

During the pandemic, the unit pressured social media companies to censor content critical of lockdown measures, vaccination of children, and discussions on vaccine passports. Now, it flags videos it deems as exacerbating tensions in Britain, especially following the unrest in Southport due to a migrant’s actions. Emails obtained reveal government workers asking TikTok to investigate posts critical of migration and policing at rallies.

The report also highlights concerns raised by the US House of Representatives’ judiciary committee regarding British government censorship on social media. The Trump administration expressed worries about the UK’s crackdown on users posting content it considers harmful. The introduction of the Online Safety Act has further fueled fears of increased censorship.

Elon Musk’s X has accused the UK of censorship under the new law, warning about threats to free speech. The Big Brother Watch anti-censorship group has called for an investigation into the government’s spying activities, emphasizing the need for oversight to prevent monitoring and censorship of controversial speech without accountability.

As concerns about censorship and surveillance grow, it is essential to support efforts to combat mass censorship. Consider donating via Locals or explore unique merchandise to support the cause.
